Music
Music is the word ...
Not really astonishing if you consider that over 4000 music and theatre events in different genres are held in the Festival city throughout the year. Apart from well known highlights such as the Salzburg Festival itself, 'Jazz Autumn' in November or 'Mozart Week' in January, the are countless orchestral and chamber music concerts, serenades, soloist concerts, concerts in the most beautiful and elegant rooms of Salzburg's palaces (e.g. the famous Palace concerts in the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace), rock and pop concerts, performances at the Landestheater, the Kammespiele, the Marionette Theatre, many private stages, cabarets, sacred music concerts etc.
Sound of Music Show The show begins with a film interview with the real Frau von Trapp recounting her family's true story. Guests then dig into a hearty, four-course meal accompanied by a local band playing a somewhat bizarre mix of Alpine folk songs and classical pieces by Mozart and others. By the time the coffee comes though, the place is really kicking—with the band thrashing out classic singalong pieces like "The Hills are Alive," "Do-Re-Mi" and "Edelweiss." Tickets: Show and four-course dinner EUR 43,- ; show without dinner EUR 29,-. Open Hours: May-Oct: 7.30pm (dinner); 8.30pm (show). Phone: +43 662 826617
Salzburger Festspiele The Salzburg Festival is known throughout the world for its high calibre operas, plays and concerts. Each festival is accompanied by heated discussions on a variety of cultural issues, though there is no doubting the sheer brilliance of most of the productions. First held in 1920, it features performances by some of the biggest names in classical music, opera and theatre, and draws tens of thousands of culture-vultures to Salzburg every summer. Regular venues include the Großes Festspielhaus, Kleines Festspielhaus, Landestheater and Mozarteum.
Mozart Dinner Concert The Mozart Dinner Concert is held in the atmospheric, baroque vaults of St Peter's Abbey. Visitors can savour a fine three-course meal accompanied by the Mozart Ensemble, which performs works composed by Salzburg's most famous son. The musicians are clad in historical costumes and the whole atmosphere transports you back to Mozart's times. While no doubt extremely touristy, the Mozart Dinner is a must for any visitor to Salzburg. Phone: +43 662 828 695
